How to Mix Wood Finishes in Your Home
I had a client recently that had a question about purchasing furniture for their new home. She naturally worried about the idea of having pieces in their open floor plan that wasn’t the same wood finish. Can you mix woods?!
The simple answer if you don’t want to read this whole thing: YES!
There are a few easy rules that will help you along the way.
From my experience, using a singular wood tone in a space makes it feel very one note and flat. If you’re looking to create a more cohesive, lived in and warm space, you want to find tones that contrast and compliment each other.
Room & Board has a great example below of tones that work together.

A few simple steps that we recommend:
Have one base tone (that could be based on your flooring, etc.)
Mix tones from the same tonal family - either warm or cool tone family.
Create balance with other materials throughout the home.

Whether you’ve been in your home for awhile or newly moving in, the truth is that you’ll collect furniture and pieces that aren’t going to be tone-for-tone matches, which is what makes a home feel so homey in the best way.
Long answer: create your best home and mix the tones!
