Breaking Down Projects into Achievable Goals

We spend years or decades daydreaming of all of the things we would love to create in our homes. We see the before and we see the after… but what about the middle?

For me, that’s my favorite parts - seeing, envisioning, organizing, planning, curating, pivoting, and more - but that’s because it’s my job. Le duh.

For you, potentially, these are the parts that are overwhelming and so time consuming that you sometimes start the project before you’re really ready (i.e. when we have half done home upgrades circling around) or never get around to starting at all.

We want to offer you a little buddy breakdown that will get you on track, whatever the outcome you decide you want it to be.

Step One || Do I Need To Hire A Designer?

I want to start by asking this, because the internet has been teaching us that we can all pretty much build a house on our own at this point and I’m here to point out that that just not might be true for everyone.

Your home is one of the biggest investments. It’s your home, your future and holds so many important memories and moments. So, it should be handled with the care it deserves.

When you’re deciding on what is the best avenue for your investment and if that includes hiring a designer to help navigate the project, we offer a few points to decide on for yourself:

  • Time is a valuable asset. Singular space projects can take up to 40 hours of work to complete from start to finish. That can be a lot when you’re already working a 40+ work week and have a family, social life, extracurriculars, etc.

  • Starting from scratch can be a fun learning experience, but can also be overwhelming when having to deal with a lot of trial and error.

  • Managing a project is super fun when everything is going smoothly. It’s not as cute when it’s not.

If either of these 3 points seem like deal breakers to you, then I would highly recommend hiring a design. Period. This isn’t a sales pitch, it’s just a fact. There are tons of designers, myself included, who offer multiple services from Full Service to Consults. They’re various in investment and are worth a chat overall.

Step Two || You Decided That You’ve Got This!

We support it and that’s what this series is all about! We want you to be able to feel as calm about this as possible.

Let’s start with this little bitty guide (we’re using a Living Room as an example) and break it down from there:

Today is all about breaking down each piece of the project into condensable goals, because no project just goes from A to Z without everything in between.

When you think about your project, we want you to start with writing down the main points that you want to achieve - and make those details.

Instead of saying “overhaul of living room”, write out things like:

  • New sectional

  • Paint room

  • New flooring

  • Reface fireplace

Step Three || You’re Crushing The Next Phase

Now that you have those main goals all lined up for your Living Room Project, it’s now time to break them down into action items.

Let’s take your new sectional goal for example. While it seems as easy as just going to a store, buying and moving on. There are points you want to know or have figured out ahead of time to make the most of your investment:

  • Size: When you plan out your living space, you should draw out roughly the size of the sectional that you want to have. Too small and it won’t look right, too big and it won’t fit/look out of place.

  • Budget: It’s not only about setting the budget that you would want to spend, but to also see what average budgets are around your area. Consider the quality, size, fill, durability, etc. Look online at stores that you’ve liked and see what it costs for size and style of furniture you’re needing.

  • Custom or Big Box Store: If you’re not finding the style that you prefer in a retail store, you can always reach out to a local upholsterer to see what their pricing and availability is. What is the design style of your room? Will a modern sofa work or do you need something more classic?

  • Fabric Options: Decide on the use of the room and source fabric options that meet those needs. Patterned, fabric style, tufting, nailheads, railroading, ruffles, etc. If you have pets or kids, we would recommend getting a highly durable option.

  • Turnaround Time and Delivery: How long will it take to get your sectional? Does that work with your desired time period? Do you have a delivery plan? Does the company offer White Glove services? Do they only do a curb service - so do you have a way to get it in the door?

While there might be more questions to consider, it’s best to break them down step by step in order to get the project completed to your desired standard.
