How to Realistically Use Pinterest to Design Your Home

I’ve loved Pinterest since the day it came out. I had pins and boards galore from the get-go. (I’m looking at you 2010 Wedding Board with hay bales and wine corks!)

When it came to design, obviously I’ve used it as my go-to for everything from business ideas, inspiration and more. Naturally, when it came time to onboard clients, having them send me their Pinterest board was a great way for me to see how they dreamed up their spaces - but that came with a few small issues at times:

  • “I don’t really use it.”

  • “I have no time.”

  • “I’ve had this board forever, I don’t think I like any of those ideas anymore!”

These answers are why I created a 3-Step plan that will design you home with Pinterest so that it feels a whole lot less overwhelming.

o n e || create a pinterest board

don’t judge my pinterest boards - I have one for everything!

Bonus: share it with me immediately!

It takes 2 minutes or less to create a Pinterest board - add a name (you can divide by rooms in your house or just make a general one) and share it with me. You might want to hit the “make this board private” button, but otherwise that’s it.

Step one DONE!

t w o || pin it to win it

  • Grab a coffee or a cocktail.

  • Turn on your favorite show or podcast.

  • Turn on a timer anywhere from 30min - 1 hour.

…and let’s go!!! You’re going to type in anything from a generic “Living Room” or a little more detailed with “Modern Living Room”, “Coastal Living Room”, “Cozy Living Room".” Go through a pin every single thing that sparks your interest - NO EDITING - just a full on free for all.

I promise this will help you later.

If a timed situation feels too overwhelming, then set a goal for a certain amount of pins. I would aim for at least 25 - which is easy in the world of Pinterest.

Step two… DONE!

t h r e e || matching game

This is the step that either you, the homeowner, or me, the designer, will take over for more analytics.

By analytics, I mean, we basically play the matching game.

Take an example of this Laundry Room board - if you look, you’ll see that in three pins, a major factor are tucked away drying racks/features. That tells me that this is an important feature that should be included.

I’ve had past clients discover that they actually like more classic design styles vs. the hyper modern aesthetic that they thought they loved. We selected colors palettes, mirror styles, textures, entire exterior build designs from a handful of pins in a board.

Maybe I love the idea of the number three, but it’s true that going through your board and finding 3 potential matches means that you really like it.

Once you’ve done this, it will make your mood board a lot more easy to put together (hint: that will be our next piece.)
