How to Plan a Bathroom Remodel

Embarking on a bathroom remodel can be both exciting and overwhelming. As an interior designer, I’ve seen many clients dive into the process without a clear plan, leading to stress and sometimes regrettable decisions. To help you navigate your bathroom transformation smoothly, here’s a step-by-step guide to planning your remodel.

one || determine the level of remodel

Before you start picking out tiles or fixtures, take a moment to think about what you want to achieve with your remodel and firmly establish what size you’re wanting to do.

  • Surface Remodel: This is going to be the easiest option when it comes to the scale. If you’re like the general layout, size of your bathroom and surfaces are good to go. This is more of a refresh stage - patching up, repairing, new paints, etc. All of this is friendlier to your wallet and your time.

  • Extensive Gut/Replace Remodel: This is the next level up, whereas you’re keeping the layouts and all fixture locations, but you’re going to gut the space to replace and install potential new plumbing fixtures, vanities, flooring, lighting, hardware and more. This could involve going into walls that contain electrical, as well as replacing older plumbing to be refurbished. When involving a gut job, you’ll likely need to prepare to replace all of the items that will easily become damaged and unable to reinstall like flooring, shower, tub, etc.

  • Bathroom Layout Remodel: This is the remodel level where the perimeter of the bathroom remains the same, but space between those walls gets moved around. It could be adding or removing an inside wall, swapping shower locations, moving the toilet or more. It would involve wiring alterations, moving around plumbing and replacements of FFE. It is more costly and invasive, but overall would provide a more custom space.

  • Full Change of Room Remodel: Altering the footprint of your home is always going to be a process. Sometimes this means putting the bathroom where another room used to be, or altering the spacing due to an enlargement of another space - either way, it’s changing the perimeter of the bathroom, therefore considered a large scale remodel. It combines elements of the other remodel types, including needing all new FFE, flooring, plumbing, etc.

If you’re trying to decide while remodel is right for you, consider the following questions:

  • Functionality: Is your current layout working for you? Do you need more storage, a larger shower, or perhaps a double sink?

  • Aesthetic: What style do you envision? Are you drawn to modern minimalism, rustic charm, or classic elegance?

  • Budget: What’s your budget? It’s essential to set a realistic figure that includes materials, labor, and unexpected costs.

two || create a wish list

Now that you have a clear idea of your goals, jot down everything you’d love to include in your new bathroom. This could range from specific types of fixtures to unique storage solutions. Don’t hold back—this is your chance to dream!

Similar to the way I talked about Designing Your Home with Pinterest, use this same tactic to create the vision board of what you might really want as a whole that would help gather inspiration.

three || setting your budget

Once you’ve established your wish list, it’s time to create a budget. Break it down into categories like materials, labor, permits, and a contingency fund for unexpected expenses (typically 10-20% of your total budget).

Costs can vary pretty widely, but it is always going to be something that would benefit from a true healthy budget. What would seem to be a simple makeover of the surfaces and accessories can easily cost several thousand dollars, while a typical mid-level remodel with full fixture replacement ranges from $15,000 to $18,000. Extensive renovations can run to $30,000 and up.

Even though most bathrooms are small, the high cost comes from the intensive amount of sub-contracting you may have to do (plumbers and electricians) and the expensive elements involved (fixtures, cabinetry, etc.).

Be honest about what you can afford and prioritize your must-haves versus nice-to-haves.

four || diy or hiring a pro

When deciding on DIY vs. Hiring out, you should really take a look at your answers from the sections above and see what that would really look like for you. Unless you’re a seasoned DIYer, hiring professionals can save you time and ensure quality work.

If you are truly motivated and it is more of the surface remodel, then you could potentially do it yourself. It’s important to detail that all projects are not created equal, so have budget set aside for contingency. You should assess your needs and see what you can do and which would be better to leave to a professional. Investing in a professional is investing in the longevity of your bathroom.

If you’re looking for a designer to help layout your plan, Elle Macque can help guide you along the way.

five || plan a layout

The layout is one of the most critical aspects of your remodel. If you’re changing the location of plumbing fixtures, you might need a licensed plumber to ensure everything meets code. Use graph paper or a design software tool to sketch your new layout, considering the flow of the space and how you will use it.

You can always hire a design professional to help with layout designs and to-scale renderings to see how the new layout or possible changes could work.

six || choose materials and fixtures

Now comes the fun part! Select materials and fixtures that align with your style and budget. Keep in mind:

  • Durability: Bathrooms experience a lot of moisture, so choose materials that can withstand humidity.

  • Maintenance: Some materials require more upkeep than others. Consider how much time you’re willing to dedicate to cleaning and maintenance.

  • Eco-Friendliness: If sustainability is a priority, look for eco-friendly options for materials and fixtures.

seven || hire the right professionals*

*if you’ve understood that DIY isn’t for you.

I’m a big believer in your time is money, so investing in a professional can save you from overall stress and project delays. Looking for seasoned professionals can be just as easy as looking to your neighbors for recommendations they’ve used or fun ol’ google search.

Like Elle Macque, many professionals can guide you from designing layouts, materials resources and more. Interior Designer’s can also offer contractor recommendations to get the project done from soups to buts.

eight || create your timeline

With your team in place, establish a timeline for your project. This should include key milestones like demolition, plumbing, installation, and final touches. Keep in mind that some aspects may take longer than expected, so remain flexible and patient.

nine || prepare for disruption

Remodeling a bathroom can disrupt your daily routine, especially if it’s your only bathroom. Plan ahead for this inconvenience. Consider temporary solutions, such as using another bathroom or setting up a makeshift space for your essentials.

ten || enjoy the process

Finally, embrace the journey! A bathroom remodel is an investment in your home and personal comfort. While it may be challenging at times, keep your goals and vision in mind. Celebrate small victories along the way, and soon enough, you’ll be enjoying your stunning new space.

Remodeling a bathroom doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With careful planning and the right approach, you can create a space that’s both functional and beautiful. Happy remodeling!
